SMART Goals to Get Organized

“I am stuck and don’t know where to begin” is a phrase you may say to yourself when staring down an overflowing storage room or bursting closet. Likely your direction is as simple as “organize the storage room.” Well, achieving this goal can be challenging if the path forward is not SMART. This acronym stands for Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound. So, let’s apply SMART to your home organizing goals.

SPECIFIC

Something I commonly hear is “I just don’t know where to begin.” This statement is a result of overwhelming needs, such as an overstuffed closet, bursting storage room, or untidy office. Let’s get focused on one problem at a time. Decide which unorganized area of your home bothers you the most and tackle that first!

Example: Let’s say your burden is the packed storage room. Choose this room as your first project and begin by sorting (donate, recycle, sell or landfill).

MEASURABLE

To accomplish your goals, they need to be meaningful and motivating. Obviously, the motivating factor in getting more organized is to reduce the amount of clutter and easily find your stored items. More so, the motivating element might be to lift a weight off your shoulders and clear out the mental clutter of procrastinating this project. Here, it is wise to track your progress towards reaching your goals and to ask yourself “How will I know when it is accomplished?”

Example: In your storage room, think about what percentage of your stuff you’d like to eliminate. While working, track how many bins you empty out because that’ll help you determine how many bins you’ll actually need to keep.

ACHIEVABLE

Your desire to organize your home needs to be attainable and realistic. Work full-time? Kids in multiple after school activities? Busy with community service? Factor in all aspects of your life to ensure success.

Example: Every single item in the storage room represents a decision you have to make. Sure, some are easier than others, but it all takes time. Keep that in mind when tackling this project.

RELEVANT

Make sure you are ready to achieve this goal, that it is the right time in your life and that it is worthwhile. The goal might also involve a financial investment such as hiring a professional to assist you in your success.

Example: The storage room might be so overwhelming that you cannot achieve the goal on your own and you’ll need to hire a professional organizer.

TIME-BOUND

Set a target date to complete the goal. A deadline helps you focus and not let the project get derailed by unnecessary tasks.

Example: Overall goal is to complete the storage room clean out by May 1st. To accomplish this, set benchmark dates. Hire professional organizer by January 10th, complete 25% of the project by February 15th, 50% of the project by March 15th and 75% of the project by April 15th with goal achieved on May 1st!

You’ve got this! If you are specific in what you want to achieve and set a reasonable deadline while also ensuring the goal is relevant, measurable, and attainable then you are guaranteed to succeed!
