For some, bookshelves are literally just that, a place to hold books. For others, it is a place to add décor, family photos, and maybe a few books. And while it seems rather straightforward, decorating bookshelves can be quite a challenge. Getting it right can be both functional and pleasing to the eye. Here are Zestful Design’s expert tips for creating a seamless look on your shelves.
1. Color Coordinate
Taking a page from The Home Edit, create a rainbow on your shelves by combining the same colors. Add similar hued decor pieces next to the books. Paint or paper the back of the bookshelf for added color.
2. Group in Threes
The “rule of three” says that things arranged in odd numbers are more appealing, memorable, and effective than even-numbered groupings. Layer the pieces by anchoring artwork with heavier pieces and place smaller objects towards the front.
3. Sometimes Less is More
You don’t have to fill all the space on a shelf. Keep it simple. Use similar color pallets or black and white photos to simplify the design. Group smaller objects or books to create a sparse look.
4. Brighten Dark Shelves
Going in the opposite direction of tip #1, turn your books around to brighten darker shelves. Accent with white pottery pieces, add mirrored or gold framed images, or faux ivory flowers.
5. Add Artwork
Lean photos along the back of the shelves or hang directly off the shelf. Artwork helps breakup the lines of books.
